Changing Resistance to Care to Participation in Care

Webinar

About This Webinar

Successful interactions with people living with dementia require a different approach, often from person to person. This on-demand session offers your leaders and staff effective strategies for supporting people living with dementia to reduce resistance to care. These strategies will help your team develop better observational skills to recognize and intervene effectively when challenges occur.

The session also emphasizes the value of matching helping behaviors to the person’s needs and retained abilities throughout all states of dementia to promote a sense of control and self-direction. Attendees will understand that specific techniques of matching support to the state of the person living with dementia will help to foster positive interactions during care activities rather than struggle and resistance.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Discuss common causes for refusals and resistance to dementia care.
  • Describe methods for modifying assistance based on the level of dementia and brain changes, personal history and preferences, and care partner approach and behavior.
  • Demonstrate key verbal and physical care skills that can improve initial interactions with people living with dementia.
