How Relias Learning is the Solution for Small Operating Budgets

Interview with Jim Schultz, CEO, and Sherri Miser-Glish, Education Coordinator at Edgerton Hospital and Health Services


Edgerton Hospital and Health Services is located in Edgerton, WI. It houses 18 beds and 200 employees, 130 of which are full-time, 22 part-time, and 48 per diem. Services the hospital offers include LVAD rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, emergency care, urgent care, pulmonary rehabilitation, a sleep disorders center, infusion therapy, and short-term rehab.

A Cost-Effective System

Edgerton began using Relias Learning* in 2013. “As a rural, critical access hospital, we have a smaller operating budget than a large, for-profit health system,” says CEO Jim Schultz. “However, to remain competitive and provide quality care, we still need to meet the same staff certification, continuing education and compliance requirements. That’s one of the reasons we chose Relias Learning’s e-learning system.”

Customizable and Convenient

“When looking for an e-learning product, we wanted enough flexibility to add our own hospital-specific education modules as well as manage staff and facility events,” says Sherri Miser-Glish, Education Coordinator. “We now have 105 custom-developed programs.”

With Relias, staff are able to complete courses on their own time, at their own pace and from any location. “We have a lot of consulting and per diem staff who don’t live in Wisconsin full time, so bringing them in for a required education event can be challenging. Now they can access the Relias system remotely, and therefore, don’t have to be at our facility to stay compliant with their education requirements.”

The hospital has found that the Relias learning management system (LMS) streamlines tracking and reporting. “I’ve reduced my time assigning, tracking and generating completion reports for staff education by about 30 percent with Relias’s learning management system,” Miser-Glish says. She has also found the system to be easy to use and backed by an excellent client support system. “If I ever have questions or run into an issue, the Relias customer support system is always available with answers to help me troubleshoot.”
