Trauma-informed care is the philosophy of care that influences your approach to every interaction, not a technique or dedicated employee.
The impact of trauma is far reaching and affects every aspect of health. By implementing a trauma-informed care approach, both staff and clients work together in a framework of wellness that produces improved outcomes. In addition to enhanced client care, a culture of trauma-informed care and practice can improve employee satisfaction and engagement while reducing burnout and turnover.
Implementing TIC requires a shift in philosophy and clinical approach to assessment and treatment. Asking “what happened to you?” not “what’s wrong with you?” is a simple example of this adjustment that requires staff to learn new practices and techniques in working with clients.
Direct care staff must take care of themselves to treat others effectively. Employee wellness initiatives and a different approach to management and clinical supervision support the organizational shift to a trauma-informed approach and enhance care delivery.
The ACES study has proven that trauma is common and directly impacts physical and mental health outcomes. Current healthcare trends like integrated care, CCBHCs and outcome based performance management include trauma-informed care either by mandate or as a key element of success.
