Suicide is a public health crisis and affects hundreds of thousands of people each year, including those that are incarcerated in jails and prisons as well as those in the community. Fortunately, the rate of suicide in correctional populations has declined since the 1980's. Experts believe this decline is the result of appropriate prevention and intervention methods.
