    Managing Crisis to Improve Safety and Reduce Workplace Violence

    Session Description:

    Healthcare and social services workers having a higher incidence of workplace violence and managing crisis incidents than other professions. Many sources of risk and potential threats include:Clients/Patients who may have mental health issues, criminal justice involvement or behavioral conditions that impair judgment, General public: waiting rooms, community at large for workers in the field, Families/social supports of those we serve, Families/significant others of colleagues .
    It’s imperative, and often mandatory, for organizations to have a workplace violence prevention and crisis management plans in place. Staff at an organization need to know the elements of a crisis, how to manage crises when they occur and more importantly, how reduce the likelihood of occurrence.
    This session will discuss elements of workplace violence prevention plans, review crisis management (definitions, methods to prevent and de-escalate crisis) and discuss different techniques and methods of crisis prevention/management (ex: CPI, NAPPI, CISM, etc.)

    Learning Objectives:

    1. List elements of workplace violence prevention plan
    2. Define a crisis, include listing different types such as clinical vs. workplace.
    3. Differentiate between crisis prevention and crisis management
    4. Discuss and compare techniques to manage and prevent crisis

    Target Audience:

    Staff who engage with clients, leaders/managers who need to develop program and train on techniques.

    Accreditation Statements

    Relias Learning, LLC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

    Nurses will receive (1) contact hours for participating in this course.

    Relias, LLC, #1273, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Relias, LLC maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 2/10/2018-2/10/2021.     Course Delivery Format: In-person session.

    Social workers participating in this course will receive (1) Clinical continuing education clock hours.

    Human Resources Certification Institute - This program has been approved for (1) (General) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

    SHRM Preferred Provider: This course is approved for (1) contact hours.

    Completion Requirements

    In order to qualify for continuing education, attendee must perform the following:

    • Sign in/Sign Out of Session
    • Be present for the session in its entirety
    • Complete the session evaluation that will be emailed to participant within one week of conference
    • Certificates will be emailed to attendee within 30 days post-conference

    Kristi McClure, LCSW
    Kristi has more than 20 years of experience in the health and human service industry, the majority of that time working as a direct practitioner with children, adolescents and adults in both outpatient and residential/inpatient settings. She has worked with Relias for over 10 years, initially working with customers on getting the most out of Relias products, then managing the content products for HHS, and now as the Product Marketing Manager for Health and Human Services.
