Chief Executive Officer
Jim joined Relias as CEO in 2012. He was previously President and CEO of ServiceCEO, a field service software company with more than 6,000 customers around the world. Prior to ServiceCEO, Jim was Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Centive, a sales performance management software company. He also served as COO of Stryker Orthopedics’ largest independent distributor, Surgi-Care. Jim has a BS in Marketing from State University of New York College at Oswego and an MBA from the Arizona State University Carey School of Business, which included coursework at the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird). In December of 2017, he was named Business Person of the Year by the Triangle Business Journal.
Jim is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Special Olympics of North Carolina, is an Advisory Board member of Band Together, a nonprofit that uses live music as a platform for social change, a member of the Board of Directors of Navex Global, a Portland, OR based provider of ethics and compliance software as well as Dude Solutions, the leading asset management software company. Jim was a “Wish Grantor” for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Massachusetts and he had the privilege of granting six children’s wishes.
Jim trains for marathons between school events for his four children.
Chief Operating Officer
Mark joined Relias in January 2016, as Chief Operating Officer. He previously served as President and COO of Teaching Strategies, an early childhood education company delivering innovative programs that serve children from birth through grade 3. Prior to that, Mark spent eight years at Blackboard, an education technology company dedicated to improving every aspect of the education experience for millions of learners and educators around the world. While at Blackboard, Mark held a variety of roles, including SVP K-12, GM Australia/New Zealand and China, and SVP Global Sales, Operations and Marketing. He has more than 25 years’ experience in sales, marketing, alliances and client care. He is passionate about ensuring quality educational opportunities and experiences for all learners.
Mark is the Chairman of the Board at Brainfood, in Washington D.C. Brainfood is a non-profit youth development organization that uses food as a tool to promote active learning, self-reliance and healthy living to empower youth as resources in their own community.
Mark holds a BA in Math and Economics from St. Olaf College, and studied at Cambridge and Lancaster Universities in the U.K.
Mark spends his free time with his wife and two children.
Sandhya serves as Chief Medical Officer of Relias. She joined Relias in December 2016 with the acquisition of Advanced Practice Strategies (APS), a Boston-based healthcare education and technology company where she served as Chief Content Officer. APS has partnered with over 100 major US health systems to improve patient care and outcomes through the delivery of assessment-driven, adaptive learning solutions to physicians and nurses. Using a data-driven approach and innovative solutions designed to reduce variation in practice & improve the reliability of care, the company transformed the way that learning is leveraged in the healthcare space.
Prior to her role at APS, Sandhya was as a practicing physician, specializing in Obstetrics & Gynecology. She worked in private practice in the greater Boston area for over 10 years, serving a diverse population of women of all ages, demographics, and needs. The relationships that she fostered with her patients and the impact that she was able to make on their health remains one of the greatest privileges of her life. Sandhya earned both a BS in Psychology and her M.D. from Brown University. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of Massachusetts. She is a board-certified physician and Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists.
Sandhya spends her free time with her husband and two children. They all share a passion for travel and sports.
Chief Product Officer
Ben serves as Chief Product Officer leading product management, engineering, content development, business integration, and the Relias Institute. He joined Relias in March 2012 as VP of Engineering during the company’s formation by Vista Equity Partners. He previously served six years as CIO of Essential Learning, an education technology company that delivered innovative training solutions to behavioral health and intellectual and developmental disabilities agencies. Prior to that, Ben spent 10+ years in a variety of technology and management roles focused primarily on developing EMR and medication management systems. He has more than 20 years of experience in web technologies, product development, and general management for software companies focused on the healthcare and human services markets.
Ben is passionate about using technology to promote lifelong learning that empowers individuals and improves society. He volunteers with the Utah Education Network, Boy Scouts of America, and the Methodist church. Ben graduated summa cum laude from UC Berkeley and holds MS and MBA degrees from Columbia University and the University of Utah.
VP of People and Organizational Development
Tina serves as VP, People and Organizational Development at Relias. Her responsibilities include leading the HR organization, as well as the company’s acquisition integration department. Before joining Relias in August of 2016, Tina was a partner at ScottMadden Management Consultants and led their HR practice, focusing on strategy development and planning as well as comprehensive operational transformation across a variety of industries, including energy, defense and aerospace, technology, automotive, transportation and healthcare. Tina started her career in engineering, where she worked for Shell Oil on international and deepwater oil projects.
Tina serves on the Development Committee of Tammy Lynn Center, a Raleigh-based organization that empowers families and enriches the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities through education, community and support services.
Tina holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Florida State University, and an M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, and can be found frequently at volleyball matches and soccer games.
Chief Marketing Officer
Alex currently serves as Chief Marketing Officer, having joined Relias in January 2016 as Managing Director, Global Operations. Previously he was an active angel and VC investor in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, serving on several boards of local companies, including KnowledgeTree and WedPics, and volunteering with Triangle Startup Factory and NC IDEA to mentor and help budding entrepreneurs. His prior career included founder, executive and CEO roles at six startup companies, including Sun Microsystems, Be and Vitria Technology; a Group Executive Board role at Nagra Kudelski Group, a global digital security company; and seven years as a partner at Trinity Ventures, a leading Silicon Valley VC firm, investing in software and systems companies.
Alex was a board member of Start Up East Palo Alto, a non-profit educating microbusiness entrepreneurs, and a founding member of Environmental Entrepreneurs, now a national non-profit in the ecology space.
Alex was educated in the UK, with equivalency to a US Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Marketing.
Chief Financial Officer
Bjoern serves as Chief Financial Officer for Relias. His responsibilities include the accounting and finance organization, the legal team as well as the company’s Business improvement department. Previously he was the company’s Head of Mergers & Acquisitions. Before joining Relias in February of 2015, Bjoern held several senior management positions at the global media, services and education company Bertelsmann in the areas of finance, investments and strategy. Bjoern started his career in banking and in strategy consulting, where he worked for Arthur D. Little on projects primarily throughout Europe and in the Middle East.
Bjoern serves on the Board of Directors of Sport-Thieme GmbH, which is Europe’s largest distance-selling and e-commerce firm for sports equipment and sports accessories.
He completed a banking apprenticeship in Germany and earned his Master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance from the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel, Germany.
Chief Corporate Development Officer
Sam joined Relias in September 2012. He served as the Director of Strategic Programs, Director of Finance, and Vice President of Client Care prior to becoming the Chief Corporate Development Officer. Over his tenure at Relias, Sam has conducted extensive work on business integrations, client retention, and company-wide growth initiatives. He is now directly responsible for Relias merger & acquisition activities. Before Relias, Sam supported fundraising efforts at Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, a private equity firm, and served as the VP of Finance for CW Financial, a start-up consumer finance service company with approximately 300 employees and $30 million in annual sales. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the College of Charleston and an MBA from Columbia Business School.
When he’s not evaluating strategic acquisitions for Relias, Sam’s exploring different parts of the world. He has a heart for the underprivileged and supports several philanthropic organizations that he’s engaged with through his travels.
Chief Strategy Officer
Mike is the Chief Strategy Officer at Relias, responsible for building the company’s growth strategy and for all acquisition activity. As part of the original management team, Mike helped launch Silverchair Learning Systems in 2005 and served as President of SLS until it became part of Relias in 2012. Previous to SLS, Mike held executive leadership positions at the Hill-Rom Company, Berchtold Corporation, and Briggs Healthcare with extensive experience in new product development, sales and marketing management, strategic planning, and Kaizen continuous improvement methodology.
Mike earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business and an MBA in Marketing from Indiana University‘s Kelley School of Business.
Mike previously has served as Board Chairman for the Mariposa School for Children with Autism, in Cary, NC and was Board Chair for the Coastal Carolina Alzheimer’s Association in Charleston, SC. A 20+ year veteran of the post-acute market, Mike is passionate about society’s responsibility to ensure dignity and compassionate care for the elderly.
VP of Client Care
Teresa joined Relias in January 2017 as the Vice President of Client Care. Her team of professionals are responsible for implementation services, support, adoption, client advocacy and retention of the Relias clients. She previously served as the VP of Operations for Jaggaer (fka SciQuest), a leading provider of e-Procurement and Sourcing solutions located in the Morrisville, NC-area. Teresa has spent 24 years in Healthcare IT , most recently at Allscripts, where she held various leadership roles in operations. She began her professional career as a high school mathematics teacher and basketball coach in Asheville, NC. Her combined passion for education and healthcare made Relias the perfect place for her to make a difference.
Teresa earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from Western Carolina University and also played four years of college basketball. In her spare time, she enjoys the beach, golfing, working in the yard and spending time with her family
VP of Product Management
Deb serves as the Vice President of Product Management where she is responsible for directing Relias Learning’s strategic product globally. She joined Relias in January 2017 and brings a diverse background with 20+ years of experience in product strategy, product development, client support/services and manufacturing from industry leaders such as Red Hat, Teradata, Nortel Networks, SciQuest and Dude Solutions. Throughout her career she has worked across several industries where she has developed and delivered compelling product solutions that solve complex problems in the market. She leads with a passion for using technology to change how we work, how we learn and how we can improve the society we live in.
Deb holds an BSEE from North Carolina State University and is a board member with CED. She volunteers with local STEM, Senior Care and underprivilege initiatives.
VP of Content Development
Dana serves as Vice President of Content Development in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and China. His responsibilities include leading Accreditations and Regulatory Standards, Curriculum Research & Design, Educational Technology, Content Quality Assurance, Content Project Management and Content Support. His division is responsible for creating and continuously improving the Relias library of over 8,000 online courses. He is also responsible for new product development and most recently spearheaded the creation of the Learner Engagement Series, Pro-On-The-Go, BrainSparks and Learning PATHS. He joined Relias in March of 2012 during the company’s formation by Vista Equity Partners. Prior to that, Dana was the Director of Educational Technology at Essential Learning, an education technology company that delivered innovative training solutions to behavioral health and intellectual and developmental disabilities agencies. Dana also spent 11 years with Raymond James Financial serving in various roles including sales, operations leadership, compliance, recruiting, and training.
Dana is passionate about improving Healthcare systems through effective and frequent training. As an instructional designer, he geeks out talking about learning that changes behavior and the human brain’s negativity bias. He speaks about best practices in training throughout the country. Originally from Clearwater, FL, he currently lives in Cary, NC with his wife and four children. He’s an avid reader of business and organizational change books and enjoys coaching little league soccer.
VP of Marketing, Operations & Analytics
Margaret currently serves as the VP of Marketing, Operations and Analytics. She previously served as the VP of Product Management where she founded the Product Management and User Experience organization at Relias. Before joining Relias in 2013, Margaret held various product and product leadership roles throughout her 15-year tenure with Blackbaud. During the past twenty years, Margaret has supported over 30,000 organizations in Healthcare technology and education.
With a passion for education and social good, Margaret has consistently sought Mission-driven opportunities in her career, and as a senior executive has guided staff by balancing business objectives with strong corporate social responsibility.
Margaret holds a MS in Computer Science from The Citadel, a BS in Business Administration from The College of Charleston, and an AS in Computer Technology from Trident Technical College.
United Kingdom Managing Director
Deanna is Managing Director of Relias (UK) Ltd and has been based in London since early 2016. Deanna brings over 20 years of experience engaging people with online learning tools. She most recently served as Vice President of Operations and Business Development at The Breakaway Group, a Xerox Company focused on research-based Healthcare IT adoption using online learning simulation. Previously, Deanna served as Vice President of Allscripts Education Center of Excellence. There she led the creation of the company’s first fully-blended learning Academy, building a complete portfolio of self-paced eLearning courses, virtual instructor-led training, and classroom training for Allscripts’ clients, partners, and employees.
Head of German Business
Rosemarie Wirthmueller joined Relias Learning in Germany in July 2016 as Senior Director Sales, and since January 2017 she has served the company as Head of German Business, helping to establish Relias Learning as an international company.
From early on in her career, digital education was a focus. Rosemarie successfully built and led German subsidiaries of companies like Acoustiguide and Antenna International, both leading providers of audio and multimedia tours in museums. Her focus is on people management to build strong and successful businesses. Rosemarie holds a Master degree in German Literature and Theater Science from Free University Berlin. She loves to entertain friends and family and is a great cook.
China General Manager
Kate Ross joined Relias Learning in 2014. Over her tenure at Relias, she has served as an Account Executive for Health & Human Services (HHS), Global Learning and Development Specialist, Retail Sales Manager, and Business Development Manager for Asia Pacific prior to becoming the China General Manager. Before Relias, she founded a successful training center (Blue Eyed English Club) in Xi’an, China focused on helping adult learners develop American business acumen. Her prior roles included Transition Manager, Education Development Manager, Senior Teacher, and Sales and Marketing Manager across the education and RV industry. She brings 15 years of managerial experience, 8 years of experience doing business in China, and a background in education to support Relias Learning’s China operations. She has a B.S. in Business from Excelsior College.
Kate currently volunteers at the Raleigh Boy’s and Girl’s Club, a non-profit after school program that helps enable young people to reach their full potential. Before that she supported fundraising activities for Starfish Foster Home, a non-profit foster care agency that helped at risk children get access to healthcare. When not volunteering or on a plane, you can find Kate rock climbing outdoors or trail running with her dog.
